Who was Hildegard?
Hildegard von Bingen was a forerunner of holistic natural medicine.
She was born in 1098 in Bermersheim in Rheinhessen and was the last of 10 siblings in a noble family. Her parents sent her to the Benedictine monastery of Disibodenberg at the age of 8. There, in the year of 1113,Hildegard took her perpetual vows and later, in 1137, became an abbess.
As an abbess, Hildegard had access to ancient medical works through the monastic library,
was familiar with monastic medicine, and was a healer herself. She put all the gained
knowledge into her own texts.
Hildegard is considered the forerunner of holistic natural medicine. In her
book Causae et Curae (‘Causes and Treatments’), she expressed a deep
inner conviction that healing is based on faith. In the book Physica (‘The
Natural History’), she described the healing effects of plants, animals,
preciousstones and metals in details.
Hildegard von Bingen died on 17 September 1179. She has been
revered as a famous saint for many centuries. In 2012, Pope
Benedict XVI canonized Hildegard of Bingen, and in the same
year she was elevated to the rank of Doctor of the Church.
